Creating a 3D effect in Inkscape

Ever wanted to add a 3D effect to your Inkscape drawings? Here's how:

In this example we'll draw a 3D black billiard ball, and this circle will the outline of this ball.

Our drawing will emulate a light source reflected on the ball as a shiny patch. This white ellipse will become that shiny patch.

Our light source will come from the top right, so the shiny patch must reflect from the top right of the ball. To this end we rotate and move the white ellipse we created in the previous step.

This is the part where it gets exciting: we emulate the reflection by filling the white ellipse with a white radial gradient.

If you want to dim your reflection then you can do that by lowering the fill opacity of the radial gradient created in the previous steps.
Step 1: Draw a black circle

In this example we'll draw a 3D black billiard ball, and this circle will the outline of this ball.
Step 2: Draw a white ellipse

Our drawing will emulate a light source reflected on the ball as a shiny patch. This white ellipse will become that shiny patch.
Step 3: Move the reflection into place

Our light source will come from the top right, so the shiny patch must reflect from the top right of the ball. To this end we rotate and move the white ellipse we created in the previous step.
Step 4: Emulate the reflection

This is the part where it gets exciting: we emulate the reflection by filling the white ellipse with a white radial gradient.
Step 5: Fine-tune the reflection

If you want to dim your reflection then you can do that by lowering the fill opacity of the radial gradient created in the previous steps.
