Creating a drop shadow in Inkscape

Ever wanted to spice up your Inkscape drawings with one of those fancy drop shadows? Here's how.
For this tutorial we'll take the 3D ball we designed in a previous article:

The first step is to draw a black ellipse that will eventually be our shadow:

Then we turn that ellipse into a true shadow by filling it with a black radial gradient and removing the stroke:
